The world of landscape architecture design is comprised of many disciplines and is broken up into two basic parts. But before you even start with all of the book learning and field experience that goes into landscape architecture design you first need to decide what your discipline will be. By that we mean you need to decide whether you will be getting involved in residential landscape architecture or commercial landscape architecture.

There is definitely a difference between the two and while there is a lot of overlap as far as the things you need to know in order to be proficient in both of them the fact is that doing landscape architecture design for homes is very different than doing landscape architecture design for businesses.

When you deal in residential landscape architecture design you are dealing heavily in looks over substance. In other words you need to make all of the parts of the project functional but in the end the homeowner is going to want to add value to the property by using your landscape architecture design skills. In commercial landscape architecture design there is a larger emphasis on making the project functional over looking pretty. It is definitely two different worlds.

Spend Some Time In Both

Of course the only way you will ever really know where your heart lies is to spend some time in both residential and commercial projects to see which one really strikes your fancy. Because they can be so different from each other in so many ways it would be in your best interest to determine where you want to focus so that you can be sure to get all of the correct information you need while you are studying. Remember that field work is critical so get as much field experience as you can prior to setting out on your own landscaping career.
